Chapter 16

Bhaktus

We spend the entire next day tucked away in the tiny cave together. I’m not certain of anything anymore. I want Celia more than anything, but I can’t abandon my position with my warriors, either. Not when it was so recently entrusted to me.

“I’m sorry to suggest this, but we really should get moving today. We don’t have any more food, and I’ll need to hunt.”

“It’s probably for the best,” she says, rolling onto her stomach. “You’ve become insatiable. Anymore and I won’t be able to walk the rest of the way.”

We both laugh because of the truth of it. I’ve not been able to keep my hands to myself, though she seems just as eager to mate with me.

“The rain has finally stopped. I will hunt and we will be on our way.”

She’s quiet, her face turned away from me.

“What is it?” I ask, her sudden shift in mood concerning.

“Nothing.” She pulls herself off the fur, gathering her clothes.

“Liar.” I’m in front of her before she can react, pulling her close so she can’t avoid my questions. We’ve come to know each other quite well from all of the time we’ve had alone together. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“I’m sad to leave here, I guess. I know that doesn’t make any sense…we’ve been trying to make our way back all along.” She presses her hands flat against my chest, staring up into my eyes. “I like having you all to myself.”

“You’re worried about what will happen when we return?” I ask.

She nods, her eyes searching mine for something to ease her worries. Running my fingers through her hair, staring into her trusting gaze, I have to think carefully about what I can promise.

“We always said this was temporary, a fun distraction. Now I don’t want it to end,” she continues.

“Me either,” I say, my heart squeezing in my chest now that I’ve confessed it out loud. Even before I fully claimed her, I had begun to think of her as mine. The thought of another male being intimate with her, sharing the things we have, causes anger to bloom inside of me.

“Really?”

Now it’s my turn to nod. Unable to trust myself to speak, I lean down and press my lips to hers. Things have moved quickly between us, there’s no question, but in my head, she’s already mine.

“So what happens when we get back?” My hand slowly begins tracing over her bare skin. When my fingers move over her belly, she squirms as bumps follow the path of my finger. “That tickles.” Her voice is quiet, her eyes full of hope.

“I will talk to the High Counselor and see what our options might be. I don’t have enough money to keep you as my mate outright, but perhaps he’d agree to let me pay overtime.”

“So you want to keep me as your mate? Even with your new command?”

“Do not doubt it.” I’ve pinned her back onto the furs, claiming again what I already know to be mine. At least in my heart.
